He Will Show You The Way

I did not come straight to the University of Alabama out of high school, I transferred here from a community college about half an hour from my small hometown in northeast Alabama. It was quite a difficult decision, sifting through the benefits and drawbacks of each university I was considering and then finally committing myself to one. As I was going through this process, I often thought back to the story in Genesis when God first called Abram (Abraham), saying, “...Go from your country and kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you” (NRSV). I knew I would be leaving the security and comfort of my own home, so I prayed that God would do the same for me as He did for Abraham, that He would show me the place I needed to go. With time, He did. He led me to UA and blessed me with a solid group of college students at the Baptist Campus Ministries. King Solomon wrote in Proverbs that one should, “in all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (NRSV). I was encouraged by this community of Christians my age who are striving to live out these words of wisdom to the best of their ability. Even when I had trouble with classes or was stressed about an exam, I was at peace in my soul. I knew I was in the place that God called me, striving to acknowledge Him in all my ways. My relationship with Christ was strengthened because of it. As you step into the unknown, the place God has called you, strive to acknowledge Him in all your ways and you too can say, as Horatio Spafford did in his hymn, “It is well, it is well with my soul.”
