Not Just for Academics

As a senior going into my 5th year at The University of Alabama there are a few things that I

wish I knew coming into school. One major thing is that college is not a race. If you try to go at a pace you are not built for, you might just find yourself getting burned out quickly. It is not like high school where everyone is on the same track with the occasional AP or honors class. Everyone in college is working at a different pace on different assignments for different majors. Some days will be super easy with very little going on, and some days will feel like you haven’t stopped at all for a week straight. On those days where you feel the weight of the world, there is someone you can talk to… whether it be the counseling center, a minister, a friend, or anyone in between. You don’t have to deal with this transition alone.

And on that note, another thing that I wish I knew from the beginning is that college is not entirely just about academics. I know that sounds a little crazy, but while academics should be the main reason you are there, college is also a great place to make connections with people you may have never thought you would. A college as big as The University of Alabama has people from all over the world and clubs and organizations for every interest. If it is too much to choose from, I recommend starting with the BCM. You can find a church through your involvement there (because the BCM is not a church). From there, you are bound to have made friends with similar interests to find clubs or different organizations that interest you. Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? Mathew 6:25-27
