Letting Go of Control

I like to be in control of my life, my relationships, and my plans. I thought that I was in complete control of every part of my life until I came to The University of Alabama.

I pride myself in making good grades and being studious. I clearly remember the night before my first college exam. As I was studying, I became completely overwhelmed and broke down in tears. I sat on my dorm floor bawling and listening to worship music. I began to realize that I was not in control and that I could only do my best at my work, but I ultimately realized that God is in control. I gathered myself and went to the BCM for Discovery. That night someone reminded me of Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will guide you on the right path.” I decided that I was going to allow God to have complete control of my life and plans starting that night.

These verses hold great importance because they remind us of our need for God. Our whole heart should TRUST in the Lord because when we do, He will guide us on the right path and our lives will be less stressful. There is no reason to worry or stress over the future when you simply cannot control it. It is a lot easier to hand complete control of your life over to God.

Since that night, I no longer break down over the stress of the next day. I have had an overwhelming sense of peace about grades and important decisions that I never had before. Making that simple, little change has impacted my life in ways that I had never imagined before. Now that I have given God full control of my life, I have been able to grow tremendously in my walk with Him. I have also been able to have spiritual conversations with people that I never imagined I would be able to have before.

I want you to remember that God is in control through every high and every low. College is a time to grow in your faith, get a degree, and make life-long friends. Do not let the worry of tomorrow make this time in your life so unenjoyable.

Trusting God will change your life for the better!
