A Community Like No Other

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Colossians 3:15-17

New friends, it is because of verses like these that I am overjoyed to meet you. This is especially to those of you who may not have known community, may have never really dug into Scripture, and may have never viewed schoolwork and friendships as ways to worship the Lord Almighty. I was like you once. I was a freshman—scared, yet unlikely to admit it. I thought I knew what the church was about from what I had read and seen.

Babe, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

This place, the BCM, is the building where a community has formed that is unlike any I’ve ever seen with student leaders willing to work together and broken people willing to set aside their flesh and invest in one another sacrificially. I know not everyone will find their place here, but there is a huge possibility you will. And you don’t want to miss out on this chance. We are called as one body. We are called to Him together. We are a net, a staff, a burning bush, an altar, and a tunic for those not found yet.

I need you. And you might need me.

For the word to dwell in you richly so that you can take part in this community, you must recognize and feel its power. It is because of its power that we sing. It is the foundation for our joy and thankfulness. I urge you to crack that Bible open for just a moment. Lay your eyes across Colossians, Hebrews, Romans, John, or Psalms. The Lord’s Word, like rain falling to the earth, will never return void.

The last sentence is really what my mind has returned to as I’ve grown in my faith and staggered through school work. Sometimes I have just wanted to throw up my hands and question God about the purpose for all my misery before and after exams. Whatever you do—fail, pass, or ace—there is a reason for it all. If you are giving everything you have, then for what can you be ashamed?

Lastly, this is all about Jesus. Never ever forget that. Never.
